If you purchase Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard from any other channel, you can download an ISO image and an evaluation product key for Windows Server Essentials from the TechNet Evaluation Center. Performing the transition as described in the next step will convert the evaluation product to a fully licensed and supported product.

  • Combined VM images into a single image to enable migration between shape series.

  • Added Windows 2012 R2 VFIO driver for E3 and E4 shapes.

  • Latest OS updates as of April 13, 2021.

  • Reenabled in-transit encryption for paravirtualized boot volume and block volume attachments.

Once, you are logged in again you can disable the Enhance Security Configuration and Firewall on the server. Also, you have to run the Windows Update every time before any configuration or installation on Windows Server 2012 R2 is attempted.

Although .NET Framework 3.5 is listed as a feature of Windows Server 2022/2019/2016/2012R2, its binary files are missing from the Windows component store (Features on Demand concept). This is done to reduce the size of the operating system image on the disk. You can check if the .NET Framework 3.5 source files are available in the local component store of Windows Server with the command:

I have also tried with .Net package downloaded from -us/download/details.aspx?id=21 but it didn't worked. Also tried to install it by mounting Win 2012 ISO on the server and by specifying SxS folder location but still it didn't worked.

I have been reading this thread and have a 2012R2 server also. I have checked and removed the security updates as previously stated by Joyce. I then installed the 3.5 features under the Roles and Features. The problem is when I go to IIS and try to set the application pool version, I only see 2.0 and 4.0.

Then re-run the DISM command preferably with the very latest image file or online (again as I mentioned before we had to use an official downloaded trial ISO, because our WSUS server seemed to stop the online DISM command working). We didn't use the original installation disk because our system had been patched to a higher level in windows update.

As another part of my series for Windows Server 2019, this blog post covers the in-place upgrade feature. The in-place upgrade allows you to upgrade your existing LTSC versions of Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016 servers to Windows Server 2019. Windows Server 2019 In-place Upgrade will enable businesses to update to the latest version quickly. Especially if you have servers which you might need to install some dependencies for the applications. I saw a lot of customers who not have documented their server installations and neither used infrastructure as code to deploy them. For these customers, it can be hard to upgrade to newer versions of Windows Server. With the Windows Server 2019 In-Place Upgrade feature, this should get a lot easier. Especially since Windows Server 2019 brings a lot of improvements.

Hi ErnestYes SBS and Essentials are a little bit different. We have some articles on Docs, for example, this one: -us/windows-server-essentials/migrate/Move-Windows-SBS-2008-to-the-Destination-Server-for-migration?WT.mc_id=thomasmaurer-blog-thmaure. I hope this helps.

I am currently running on server 2008 R2 Standard..however I also have SQL2012 running. this server is just dedicated for the SQL. Is there a way to just do a fresh install of server 2016 or 2019 without interfering with the SQL?

Hi TonySure, you can just do a fresh server install and backup and restore the Database or use other ways to migrate SQL server. This article here is about different migration options for a SQL Server to a new one in Azure. But most of them also work to just move from a SQL Server to a new SQL Server running on another server. -us/azure/virtual-machines/windows/sql/virtual-machines-windows-migrate-sql?WT.mc_id=thomasmaurer-blog-thmaure

Did you have a look at this Docs article: -us/windows-server-essentials/migrate/migrate-from-previous-versions-to-windows-server-essentials-or-windows-server-essentials-experience?WT.mc_id=thomasmaurer-blog-thmaure This should cover the part for your scenario. Does that answer your question? :)

Hi.Can you inplace upgrade a live server 2008r2 using an evaluation server2012 and then finally to a licensed 2019 ?Scenario: Server 2008 r2 computer has been demoted to member, Av removed.Cheers

With Windows Server 2012 R2 coming to its end of life, many users might be tempted to also perform an in-place upgrade on servers. For years, any IT administrator would look at you in disgust if you even mentioned an in-place upgrade; the proper way to upgrade was to manually install the new operating system and then install or copy the necessary information and data from the old server to the new. The idea was to ensure that any older style permissions would not be inherited with a clean install. In particular, this helped ensure you set up the servers securely.

Windows Server 2012, codenamed "Windows Server 8", is the sixth version of the Windows Server operating system by Microsoft, as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It is the server version of Windows based on Windows 8 and succeeds Windows Server 2008 R2, which is derived from the Windows 7 codebase, released nearly three years earlier. Two pre-release versions, a developer preview and a beta version, were released during development. The software was officially launched on September 4, 2012, which was the month before the release of Windows 8.[4] It was succeeded by Windows Server 2012 R2 in 2013. Mainstream support for Windows Server 2012 ended on October 9, 2018, and extended support will end on October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2012 is eligible for the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which offers continued security updates until October 13, 2026.

Microsoft introduced Windows Server 2012 and its developer preview in the BUILD 2011 conference on September 9, 2011.[9] However, unlike Windows 8, the developer preview of Windows Server 2012 was only made available to MSDN subscribers.[10] It included a graphical user interface (GUI) based on Metro design language and a new Server Manager, a graphical application used for server management.[11] On February 16, 2012, Microsoft released an update for developer preview build that extended its expiry date from April 8, 2012 to January 15, 2013.[12]

Windows Server 2012 has an IP address management role for discovering, monitoring, auditing, and managing the IP address space used on a corporate network. The IPAM is used for the management and monitoring of Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers. Both IPv4 and IPv6 are fully supported.[26]
